STATEMENT
Caroline Macdonald is an Oxford & London based printmaker.
Her work explores the order of time, and illusionistic encounters through her responses to art history. Different temporalities sediment and compress in her work. Her practice usually draws on historical and ancient artifacts selected from galleries and museums. She treats the museum like a ‘garden’, selecting the choicest specimens “ripe for the picking” to reflect on her personal past and our particular moment in time.
From drawing and photography in museums and galleries, Caroline makes detailed records of her subjects. Back in the studio she deconstructs and reconstructs these responses in novel ways to render the familiar strange. Temporalities alter; different generations of print technology envision strange, new meanings taken into analogue print. The scale and energy of a Baroque masterpiece for example fragments and breaks up through technology and time.
Caroline curates a fragmented patterning using the language of error. The slip and slide of the digital glitch creates chromatic aberrations and fissures where the usual distinctions between one thing and another blur and intertwine.
Caroline graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2023 with an MA in Fine Art Print. She has exhibited in small group shows and large exhibitions and Print fairs in the UK.
